Is Your Address Vulnerable to a Chemical Spill?

Have you ever wondered if your home or school could be affected by a chemical release? You can now learn the answer and find out what is being done to prevent a release from occurring in the first place.

North Central Florida Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) Chairman John Hudson said, "the public has the Right-to-Know about chemical hazards in our communities and needs to know that industry and local governments are doing more each year to help keep our communities safe from spills." To help educate the public, February 25th through March 3rd is being proclaimed as Hazardous Materials Spill Prevention Week. Many north central Florida cities, counties and school boards are joining the LEPC in this proclaiming the week.

The LEPC has a federal mandate to increase community safety from chemical spills in eleven counties in north central Florida. Two laws, the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act and the Clean Air Act's chemical accident prevention provisions (also called the Risk Management Program) were passed by Congress to provide you with information on very hazardous chemicals at businesses and other facilities in your community.

A new Vulnerable Zone Indicator System (VZIS) now allows you to quickly find out if an address of interest to you - your home, place of work, or child's school - could be affected by a chemical accident. The VZIS system can be accessed over the Internet at www.ncflepc.org. In a few days you will receive an email response that says yes or no if the address may be in a vulnerable zone of a facility that submitted a Risk Management Plan.

Hudson says, "If you receive a yes on VZIS, then contact the LEPC for additional information. Many people want to know what is being done to prevent spills and if emergency plans include their homes. To learn more about your Right-to-Know, visit the LEPC website or call LEPC staff Dwayne Mundy at (352) 955-2200 ext. 108."
