The Clean Air Act Section 112(r) mandates that facilities develop Risk Management Plans (RMPs) to prevent accidental chemical releases. This federal regulation expands the focus of the LEPC from primarily planning for emergency responses to accidental hazardous materials releases to playing an active role in preventing spills. The purpose of this week is to increase awareness of the requirements and opportunities of this new program.
The LEPC uses an annual Hazardous Materials Spill Prevention Week as a focal point of public education and outreach efforts.
Other LEPCs and local governments are encouraged to also sponsor a hazardous materials awareness week to provide a focal point to help educate the general public and elected officials on the importance of local hazardous materials prevention and emergency response programs.
